Marukyu Koyamaen Isuzu — Ceremonial Matcha

Isuzu is one of the most loved ceremonial matchas in the Marukyu Koyamaen range. It sits at the sweet spot between approachable and complex. Bright, sharp, and alive with umami, it rewards attention without demanding expertise.

Brewed at full temperature it's bold and electric. Drop the water to 70°C and something shifts. The sharpness softens, the amino acids open up, and it becomes one of the smoothest cups you'll make. In a latte it cuts through milk cleanly and stays vibrant.

This is a matcha that works every way you make it.

Flavour
Sharp and vibrant with a clean acidic edge. Rich in amino acids. Deep umami that softens beautifully at lower brewing temperatures. Bright green colour, fine texture, minimal bitterness when prepared correctly.

Best for
Usucha (thin matcha), matcha lattes, iced matcha. Suitable for beginners stepping up from entry-level ceremonial grades and experienced drinkers who want a bold everyday cup.

How Isuzu compares
Aoarashi is Marukyu Koyamaen's entry ceremonial grade. Smooth, gentle, approachable. Isuzu is the next step. More character, more intensity, more presence in the cup. If you've tried Aoarashi and want more, Isuzu is the natural move.

Origin & Production
Producer: Marukyu Koyamaen, Uji, Kyoto, Japan. Founded in 1704, over 300 years of matcha expertise. Tea plants are shaded with reeds and straw before harvest, raising chlorophyll levels and producing the vivid green colour and smooth umami Marukyu Koyamaen is known for. First spring growth, hand-picked and stone-ground to a fine powder to protect aroma and flavour.

The name
Isuzu takes its name from the Isuzu River that runs through Ise Shrine, one of Japan's most sacred sites. The name was personally bestowed by the Grand Priest of Ise Shrine and carries an association with purification and clarity. It is one of the few matchas with a name of genuine cultural and spiritual significance.

Storage
Keep in a cool, dark place away from heat, light and humidity. Seal tightly after each use. Best consumed within one month of opening.
