Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Matcha

1. What is ceremonial grade matcha?

Ceremonial grade is the highest quality matcha available. Made from the youngest first harvest leaves, shade-grown to maximise chlorophyll and amino acids, then stone-milled slowly to protect aroma and flavour. It is designed to be drunk as is or in a latte. All Seren Matcha products are ceremonial grade, first harvest.

2. What is the difference between Seren Haru and Seren Hikari?

Both are ceremonial grade, first harvest matcha from Uji, Kyoto. The difference is character and intensity.

Haru is softer, sweeter and more approachable. Creamy, smooth, vivid umami, low bitterness. Best for beginners and everyday lattes.

Hikari is bolder and more complex. Rich umami, fresh green pea sweetness, gentle bitterness and a clean lingering finish. For experienced matcha drinkers who want more depth and presence.

Not sure which to choose? Start with Haru.

3. What does first harvest mean?

First harvest, also called shincha or first flush, is the first picking of tea leaves in early spring. These leaves carry the highest concentration of amino acids, chlorophyll and nutrients built up over winter. The result is matcha that is more vibrant in colour, smoother in flavour and richer in umami than later harvests. All Seren Matcha uses first harvest leaves only.

4. Where does Seren Matcha come from?

Our tencha is sourced from small, family-run farms in Uji, Kyoto, Japan. Uji is the birthplace of matcha and home to some of the most respected tea producers in the world. Stone-milled slowly. First harvest. Every tin is made with the same level of care as the one before it.

5. What is the difference between stone-milled and machine-milled matcha?

Stone milling is slow and generates minimal heat, which protects the aroma, colour and delicate flavour compounds in the leaf. Machine milling is faster and produces more heat, which can degrade aroma and flatten the flavour profile. All Seren Matcha is granite stone-milled at low speed. It is one of the details that makes a real difference in the cup.

Our Products

6. How long does matcha last once opened?

Once opened, matcha is best consumed within one month for peak flavour and colour. Store in a cool, dark place away from heat, light and humidity. Seal the tin tightly after every use. Because Seren Matcha is stone-milled to order, your tin arrives as fresh as possible. The sooner you drink it, the better it tastes.

7. Do you stock other Japanese matcha brands?
