Marukyu Koyamaen Matcha – Saiun
Ceremonial-Grade Japanese Matcha Powder

Step into the richness of Japanese tea tradition with Saiun, a deeply expressive ceremonial-grade matcha crafted by Marukyu Koyamaen. Meaning "Coloured Clouds", Saiun lives up to its poetic name with a flavour profile that feels both grounded and ethereal.

Flavour Profile

Primarily intended for koicha (thick tea), Saiun is bold, smooth, and richly flavoured, with subtle hints of autumn squash and cooked greens. Its umami-forward character is soft yet complex, with an underlying natural sweetness and whispers of vegetal broth. When prepared thick, a gentle chocolate-like note emerges, adding depth without bitterness.

When whisked as usucha (thin tea), the flavour softens significantly—clean, mild, and pleasant, but it’s as koicha where Saiun truly shines.

Aroma

The dry powder offers a delicate honeyed sweetness, which deepens when mixed with water into a vegetal, slightly nutty aroma reminiscent of fresh peas or lightly roasted squash.

Texture & Preparation

Stone-milled in the Uji tradition, Saiun boasts a fine, velvety texture that whisks into a rich, creamy foam. Its low astringency and smooth mouthfeel make it especially enjoyable even for those new to koicha.
